sub-coastal fishing areas

What are the sub-coastal fishing areas in Italy, but above all what are the rules to follow for those who fish in these areas? Today underwater fishing is considered a sport to all intents and purposes and is regulated by a decree.

Its practice, as is known, is open to all even if there is no precise training on what is permitted and what is prohibited, not only from a legislative point of view, but also from a moral and ethical point of view.

Distances and limitations in sub-coastal fishing areas

Among the fundamental themes when it comes to areas of spearfishing coast we find distance and respect for limits. Pursuant to article 129 of Presidential Decree No. 1639/68, this discipline cannot be practiced at a distance less than 500 meters from the beaches which are frequented by bathers.

Spearfishing is also prohibited at a distance that is less than 100 meters in the presence of professional fishing nets and fixed fishing installations. The distance must be less than 100 meters even in the case of ships that are anchored outside the port and in sea areas with transit of ships.

The beaches with bathers and the coasts

Very often when we talk about sub-coastal fishing areas we wonder if the rule is linked not only to the beaches, but also to the cliffs. In reality, the distance set for those who practice underwater fishing has been studied in order to be able to protect swimmers. Precisely for this reason the obligation must always be considered valid in the event that the area – in this case a cliff – is frequented by people.

What is meant by the term beach with bathers? Undoubtedly a stretch of coast where there are bathers. So not only bathing establishments, but also beaches and cliffs that are usually frequented by people.

The rule that imposes a distance of 500 meters from the coast it is valid all year round and on the whole territory. However, it should be clarified that from this point of view the Bathing Ordinances play a key role. This is because they often aim to identify specific areas within which bathing is prohibited. Before practicing spearfishing it is therefore essential to consult them, referring to the area in which you want to dive.

The importance of reporting

It should also be emphasized that those who practice spear fishing are required to signal their presence using a pink flag with a white diagonal stripe that is visible at a distance never less than 300 meters. If the athlete is accompanied by a watercraft, the flag must be hoisted on it. The diver must be within a radius of approximately 50 meters with respect to the vertical of the float with the signal or its means of support.
